What is Photophobia?

Photophobia is extreme light sensitivity. People with photophobia may experience uncomfortable symptoms when exposed to even moderate light — including sunlight. Their symptoms include:

  • Pain or discomfort
  • Headaches & migraines
  • Squinting
  • Tears

  • Dry eye
  • Trouble focusing
  • Desire to keep eyes closed

Photophobia may be caused by temporary infection, injury, or inflammation. Or, it could be a chronic issue. Occasional light sensitivity isn’t usually serious. But if it comes on suddenly or you have severe photophobia, it warrants medical attention.

To assess the real impact of our glasses, we used the clinically-validated HIT-6 method to collect data from more than 1,000 people with photophobia. We studied their light sensitivity impact before wearing our glasses, and again after using them for 4 weeks. The results speak volumes.

2x Reduction in Light Sensitivity

The research doesn’t end there. Researchers from the University of Utah have also analyzed how the color of tinted lenses affects people with blepharospasm or BEB, a specific light sensitivity condition. 

Some participants wore gray-tinted lenses, while others wore rose-tinted lenses. The study found that patients who wore the rose-tinted lenses saw a 2x reduction in their light sensitivity, as opposed to the gray tint many sunglasses use.

From 6 to 2 Migraine Episodes Per Month

Another study from the University of Birmingham compared blue-tinted lenses to the same rose-colored tint. In this study, patients who wore the rose-colored lenses saw a big reduction in migraines suffered per month, from more than 6 to less than 2. Migraine is a major symptom of light sensitivity.

In these studies, the rose-colored lenses blocked certain wavelengths on the spectrum, while the gray and blue lenses blocked different wavelengths, respectively. Clearly, the wavelengths blocked by different types of lenses has an impact on light sensitivity, with the rosy tint coming out on top.

Photophobia Glasses vs. Blue Light Glasses

Blue light glasses are not the same thing as photophobia glasses.

Blue light glasses have been studied a lot, but they’ve never been shown to reduce photophobia symptoms, such as migraine. They just aren’t designed to block enough of the types of light that bother you.

Axon vs blue blockers

The Problems With Blue Light Glasses

There are three main problems with blue light glasses.

  1. They don’t block the right types of light
  2. They’re terribly inconsistent
  3. They reflect light back into your eyes

As you can see from the graphic below, blue light glasses are made by a lot of different companies. When tested, they vary widely as to the light they actually block.

Both blue and amber light have been shown to bother your sensitive eyes. But blue light glasses block only a little of the blue and even less of the amber.

Tinted glasses for photophobia have a long history, and there are other brands on the market. 

What sets Axon Optics apart is the significant improvements we’ve made to the standard photophobia tint, called FL-41 (which is the rose-rust colored tint mentioned in the studies above).

FL-41 was developed in the early 1990s to reduce headaches and eye strain caused by fluorescent lighting. The tint was helpful, but that was before Axon Optics came along. For over two decades, we’ve been refining our lens to surpass what FL-41 can do.

Many assume that all lenses for photophobia are the same, but that couldn't be more untrue. In fact, there was a study from the University of Utah that confirms this.
