Rose-Tinted Glasses for Migraines
For most migraine sufferers, especially those with photophobia, sunglasses are the common “solution” when light sensitivity starts knocking.
Unfortunately, many don’t realize the detrimental long term effects that indoor sunglasses have on sensitive eyes. When you wear dark-tinted sunglasses indoors, your eyes become dark-adapted, making light sensitivity much worse over time.
But don’t worry, there’s a rosier solution: Rose-tinted glasses! Axon Optics glasses have a rosy hue to help reduce migraine headaches by filtering certain harmful wavelengths of light from ever reaching your eyes.
Axon Optics rose-tint was designed out of the University of Utah Moran Eye Center by Dr. Bradley Katz, MD, PhD. Dr. Katz is a neuro-ophthalmologist, professor, and expert on light sensitivity.
Our Happy Customers Notice the Benefits
“I love these glasses. They make headaches/migraines and light sensitivity much more bearable! I will be purchasing a second pair just in case anything happens to this pair because I do not want to go without them, even for a day. These glasses are a great addition to my headache/migraine “toolbox.” – Sophie L
What a life changer!
“I’m so glad I purchased this. I was desperate for headache/migraine relief. I wanted to go the “natural route,” but I hate meds. I’ve tried so many options – all OTC meds, prescription pain pills, and shoulder/neck botox. These glasses exceeded my expectations. I wear them every day, all day. I’m happy to report I have significantly reduced my pain. Thank you, Axon Optics!” – Dianne L.
“These glasses have made a huge impact in reducing eye strain and day to day headaches for me. While I haven’t yet tested them during a full-blown migraine or under the office’s fluorescent lights (still working from home), I’d estimate the frequency and intensity of my daily headaches have been cut in half. This frame is lightweight and unobtrusive, which is a great fit for me as I’ve never worn glasses before.” –Katasha R.
How Does the Rose-Tint Help With Migraines?
For migraineurs, light acts as a double-edged sword. Light can be a migraine trigger AND light sensitivity is often a symptom of migraine. In a controlled study, bright lights resulted in headaches for 29% of those surveyed, and exacerbated the headaches in 73%.
Fortunately, though, not all light is bad. Based on a series of experiments in a lab at the University of Utah, and various other peer-reviewed studies, it was discovered that the light causing migraine sufferers so much trouble is between the 480 and 590 wavelengths. If you want the history (and more of the science), read our 8,000 word migraine glasses guide here.
Rose-colored lenses help prevent migraines and relieve light sensitivity by filtering certain wavelengths that are particularly problematic for those who have sensitive eyes or are prone to migraines.
This is achieved by a filter called FL-41, which Axon Optics modified over the last decade for maximum migraine relief.
At Axon Optics, We Do Things Differently
Companies providing similar eyewear will point to their reviews as proof that their products are effective at reducing migraine or photophobia. Even though Axon Optics has plenty of 5-star reviews, we wanted to take it one step further!
The most effective way to measure the efficacy of migraine treatments is with a clinically validated survey called HIT-6 (Headache Impact Test). We surveyed over 1,000 users both before and after wearing our glasses for 4 weeks. And here are the amazing results:
Less impact on your life
Decreased light sensitivity
UK Study: Rose-tint helps children with migraine
Researchers from the John A. Moran Eye Center discovered that migraine patients are only sensitive to particular wavelengths, rather than the entire spectrum. Additionally, eyewear that can filter out those wavelengths, like FL-41 glasses with a rose-tint, could help alleviate migraine pain and frequency. These lenses also helped treat overall light sensitivity in patients with photophobia.
FL-41: It Blocks the Bad Light
In a UK study, 20 children who were clinically diagnosed with migraine tried rose-tinted glasses for a four-month period. At the end of the four months, the frequency of migraines for those who wore the rose-tinted lenses dropped from 6.2 per month to 1.6 per month.
Reduces Photophobia Severity
Similar to migraine, another condition that is accompanied by extreme light sensitivity is called blepharospasm. Researchers gave blepharospasm patients rose-tinted spectacles with FL-41. Participants saw a 2x improvement in their blepharospasm severity and a significant decrease in fluorescent and overall light sensitivity when compared to regular grey lenses.
Be Cautious of Other Vendors
Axon Optics has poured over a decade of research into refining our proprietary lenses for maximum effectiveness. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case for many other vendors and optical shops that sell generic FL-41 lenses.
Not all FL-41 is the same, and not all FL-41 is effective at reducing migraine and light sensitivity.
An early research project from the University of Utah discovered wide variations in quality, lens color, and spectral characteristics of lenses from five different optical shops and laboratories. This is quite a shock when considering that customers think they’re getting the same product!
Here’s Why Axon Optics Glasses Are the Best
